What is FSSAI Registration
FSSAI Basic Registration is the initial step for small-scale Food Business Operators (FBOs) with an annual turnover of less than ₹12 lakhs. It ensures that these businesses comply with the basic food safety standards set under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. The registration is crucial as it certifies that the food products are safe for consumption, enhancing customer trust in the business. It is essential for any food-related business, from manufacturers to distributors, to legally operate and demonstrate commitment to food safety regulations.
In this section, we will cover FSSAI Basic Registration. For details on FSSAI State and FSSAI Central Licenses, please refer to their respective pages.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, regulates the safety standards of food businesses. Established under the FSS Act of 2006, FSSAI registration is mandatory for small Food Business Operators (FBOs) with an annual turnover of less than ₹12 lakhs. It ensures the safety and quality of food products and builds consumer trust.

Step 1
As the owner of a food business, you have to fill out and submit the FSSAI registration application form on the Food Safety Compliance System, i.e., the FoSCoS website. You need to fill in the details in Form A or Form B based on the type of food business you own and other factors. Form A is for the basic FSSAI registration, and Form B is for the State License and Central License.

After filling in the details in Form A for the basic FSSAI registration, you must submit the necessary documents with the application form and pay the fees. You can also visit the Food and Safety Department to submit the documents required for the FSSAI registration certificate.
Step 3
The Department of Food and Safety will take 7 days from the date of receipt to accept or reject your FBO’s application for FSSAI registration. The Department thoroughly examines the documents, and a Food Safety Officer will visit the premises for an inspection before they provide the FSSAI registration certificate.
